Does Drinking Coffee Every Day Accelerate Osteoporosis? Do You Need Extra Calcium Supplements?

Nutrition & Fitness

Does a daily coffee lead to meaningful calcium loss or osteoporosis? This article explains what caffeine may change, why overall calcium intake matters more, and why one latte alone cannot meet a day’s calcium needs.

You may have heard statements such as “coffee accelerates calcium loss” and “drinking coffee long-term can easily lead to osteoporosis.”

So, if you drink one cup of coffee every day over the long term, do you need to take extra calcium supplements?

First, the answer:

Why does caffeine cause calcium loss?

Caffeine does indeed affect calcium absorption and utilisation, mainly in two ways. [1]

1. The amount of calcium excreted by the kidneys may increase somewhat

Caffeine affects a protein in the kidneys called the “adenosine receptor,” causing the kidneys to reduce their reabsorption of sodium and water. In other words, the kidneys return less water and sodium to the bloodstream; more water is then excreted in urine, which is what we commonly call the “diuretic effect of coffee.”
