Sudden White Spots on Your Skin? 7 Common Causes
Skin & BeautyWhite patches on skin can have many causes beyond vitiligo. This article covers 7 common conditions including post-inflammatory hypopigmentation, pityriasis alba, tinea versicolor, vitiligo, and more.
Discovering white spots on your skin can be alarming, with many people immediately fearing vitiligo. However, white patches have many possible causes, most of which are benign and treatable. Here are 7 common conditions that can cause white spots on the skin.
1. Post-Inflammatory Hypopigmentation
This is one of the most common causes of white spots. After skin inflammation (from eczema, acne, burns, or other injuries), the affected area may temporarily lose pigment during healing. The white patches are usually flat, have irregular borders, and gradually repigment over weeks to months without treatment.
2. Pityriasis Alba
Extremely common in children aged 3-16, pityriasis alba presents as round or oval, slightly scaly, pale patches primarily on the face, upper arms, and trunk. It's considered a mild form of eczema and is more noticeable in darker-skinned individuals. The condition is harmless and typically resolves on its own, though moisturizers can help.
3. Tinea Versicolor (Pityriasis Versicolor)
Caused by the yeast Malassezia, this fungal infection produces small, scaly patches that can appear white, pink, or brown. It's more common in hot, humid climates and in adolescents/young adults. The patches often appear on the trunk and upper arms. Treatment includes antifungal creams or shampoos.
