Some people are concerned whether pregnant women can drink milk tea. During pregnancy, it is important to note that the daily intake of caffeine should not exceed 200mg. If craving, for pregnant mothers with normal weight and blood sugar, occasionally drinking a small cup is not a big problem.
Because caffeine can promote the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve endings, increasing heart rate and myocardial contractility, drinking milk tea may cause an increase in heart rate and a slight rise in blood pressure. Patients with arrhythmia or other cardiovascular diseases, if they feel palpitations after drinking milk tea, indeed feel very uncomfortable, then it’s better not to drink it.
Attention also needs to be paid to whether the sugar intake exceeds the standard. Because the sugar content in milk tea is extremely high: a normal sweetness milk tea(about 500mL), the added sugar content is usually between 20-50g, or even higher(equivalent to 5-12 cubes of sugar), far exceeding the recommended daily limit of added sugar during pregnancy(daily added sugar during pregnancy should be ≤25g, WHO recommendation).
High sugar can lead to rapid weight gain during pregnancy and increased risk of gestational diabetes(pregnancy insulin sensitivity changes, excessive sugar can increase metabolic burden),and may also increase the risk of hypertension and edema.
